Singing while GrowingI have been in the local church for 14 years and am still enjoying it. I'm proud to be the third generation in my family that has been in the local church. My parents introduced me to the church in Dunn Loring when I was five. I attended meetings of a local church in Taiwan before I came to the U.S. I basically grew up in and was shepherded by the church. I remember sitting with a bunch of kids my own age in a circle and there was this big easel and on it were songs; we sang those songs every day; that was the first thing I heard when I walked into the room. Then as I grew older, the songs increased in number as well as in length. At first I thought they were normal songs such as, Mary had a Little Lamb, or Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. They were just fun songs that had a catchy tune. It wasn't until 5th grade that I understood that the songs had meaning. People started taking lines from the song and making them into prayer. Singing became part of my daily habit. It's up there with brushing my teeth. In my 12th year of growing up in the church, I heard about Summer School of Truth, two to three weeks of Bible camp for junior high and high school age. At first I didn't want to go because I didn't know who was going to be there. I thought it would be a week of the serving ones preaching and lecturing. At this time, I was still growing and I had a lot of worldly things in me. When they said no worldly music, I was about to ditch that place. But after two days there, I felt refreshed. It was so sweet. One of the things that I really got into was the singing. This time, it wasn't just the tune that got my attention, but the words. I came back the following year and found it just as joyful as the first time. I've recently been going on the internet a lot. One of my favorite places to go is the boards. One topic I visit frequently is Is there a God? When I went into it, I never noticed how many people were atheists. We would have these arguments about if there was a God. There would always be someone who would say I am Christ, I have made 10 commandments, therefore you should follow them. At first, I was upset, I just wanted to knock them out, but then I would read some of the comebacks. There was always a verse, which explained everything. And no one was ever able to answer to that verse. I was so touched at what the Bible can do with those of us that need reassurance and guidance. Now I see why the serving ones encourage us to read the Bible and memorize some verses. The majority of the best times I've had in my life would be the ones where I fellowship with Christ or other Christians. Priscilla | Back to List |
